In Ursula K. LaGuin’s magical book, The Wizard of Earthsea, a young man studies to become a wizard. As an apprentice he must learn to control earth’s natural forces by giving the "true" names of the wind, light, stars, rocks, plants, and animals.

No one, of course, has such power, but knowledge of natural things was once vital for daily survival. Human ability to survive on the earth was closely bound to a knowledge and understanding of its ecosystems. Because of our increasing ability to manipulate earth’s natural systems, this knowledge may seem less necessary today. Ultimately, however, human success will depend on our relationship with the environment and all of its components. Knowledge about earth, its systems and organisms, is still a tool to be valued. Perhaps the ability to "give a name" to the trees around you will bring you closer to the natural world.

The purpose of this book is to familiarize the reader with ninety percent of the tree species found in Arkansas. Included is a description of basic tree anatomy and physiology, recognition factors of common trees for beginners or experienced botanists, tree regions of the state, scientific key usage, and a dichotomous key that identifies 101 common Arkansas trees.

Neither scientific background nor practice in wizardry is needed to understand the key or text content. Necessary terms and descriptions are explained and illustrated. Anyone from junior high age to adult should be able to use this book.

Arkansas Trees is an excellent supplementary text for use in teaching life science, biology, ecology, and botany in high school or college. It is also a good tool for those wishing to expand their knowledge of trees and to develop an ability to recognize Arkansas species. For teaching or self-review, each chapter ends with one or more activities, a list of important terms, and a set of review/application questions. The book contains 94 pages of text and is spiral bound with cover stock.
