The title of this collection reflects the origin of the works during my travels.  Typically I make ink, pencil, or watercolor sketches on site, in addition to taking reference photos.  Some paintings were finished on location; others were developed in my Little Rock studio.  Nature themes are particular favorites, although I sometimes choose architectural or figurative subjects. See samples from sketchbooks   The title also points to my feeling that artistic expression is itself a continuing journey, with differing paces, differing vistas, and differing choice of expressive means.  The variety of works in this collection testifies to this as it records my recent stretch of artistic road.  Three themes mark my work – interest in the sensuous qualities of paint and paper, abstract design with concrete references to nature, landscape or architecture, and making paintings as a link to shared experience.  My work reflects multiple purposes - to construct memories of places, to maintain connections to friends, and to invite the viewer to share in the sensuous enjoyment of shape, color, light, and line.  To encourage the viewer to enter, explore, and think, elements may be left unfinished, symbolically ambiguous, incomplete, or extending beyond the bounds of the picture space. About the Artist

International painter Barry D. Lindley has been an active explorer and constructor of art throughout his life.  Formerly a productive scientist and educator, he is now a full-time painter. In addition to his scientific degrees from DePauw University and Case Western Reserve University, he studied drawing at the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and painting at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he also served as Visiting Lecturer of Medical Illustration.  As a painter, he has also participated in workshops but is primarily self-taught from active practice, visits to the great galleries of the world, and books.  He is a Signature Member of Institut des Arts Figuratifs and Mid-Southern Watercolorists, and his works are in many private collections in the Little Rock area and throughout the country.  He has exhibited in the Delta Exhibition of the Arkansas Arts Center, MSW Annual Show, in Small Works on Paper, in ArtWorks at the Rep, and in a number of public offices in the state. Born in Indiana and a long-time resident of Ohio, he now lives in Little Rock.
