Toltec Mounds State Park

Scout Leader's Guide to

Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park

and the Indian Heritage Award

What is Toltec Mounds?

A National Historic Landmark, Toltec Mounds Archeological Site is the largest Indian mound group in Arkansas. Modern archeological research indicates the site was occupied by Plum Bayou Culture from about A.D. 600-1050. The mission of the park is to interpret and preserve this important archeological site for present and future generations.

What is the Indian Heritage Award?

The Indian Heritage Award is designed to recognize Cub Scouts who have 1) studied Native Americans in Arkansas, 2) participated in a guided tour of Toltec Mounds Archeological State Park, and 3) learned about how archeologists work to learn about prehistoric Indians in Arkansas.

What is required to earn the badge?

To earn this badge the scout must….*

…know the historic tribes of Arkansas and where they lived (Quapaw, Cherokee, Osage, Caddo, and Tunica)

…be able to define "archeology"

…be able to say why the state of Arkansas bought the land at Toltec

…identify three plants along the trail at Toltec

…identify three signs of animal life along the trail at Toltec

…know what an artifact is and how they help archeologists learn about the people who lived at Toltec and built the mounds

…show a willingness to help the park staff by picking up litter and disposing of it properly and obeying the rules of the park.

*These requirements may vary according to the age of scouts in your group.

What should we wear?

Please suggest that your group wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing appropriate for outdoor activities and for the weather.

What if it rains?

Inclement weather may limit some outdoor activities. Groups of 40 or less can be accommodated readily within the visitor center and thus rain is not a problem. Alternate indoor programs can be provided. Larger groups should contact us to discuss other options. If you should need to cancel for any reason, please notify the park immediately.

Discipline of your group:

You are responsible for the discipline of your group. This allows the park staff to spend their energy in providing quality programs and responding to questions from students. We do not have a requirement for the number of chaperones you must bring, but at least one accompanying adult for every 10-15 students is suggested.

Can we bring lunch?

Sure! We have 7 unshaded picnic tables available just outside the Park Visitor Center. We are unable to offer any indoor eating facilities so please have a contingency plan for rain or cold weather.

How do we get there?

The park is located 16 miles southeast of North Little Rock and northwest of England, off U.S. Highway 165 on Arkansas Highway 386; OR, take Exit 169 off I-40, going south on Arkansas Highway 15 for 14 miles to Keo, then Northwest on U.S. Highway 165 for 4 miles; OR from I-440, take exit 7 (Scott-England), going southeast on U.S. Highway 165 for 10 miles.

How about joining us on Cub Scout Day?

The first Saturday of May each year is set aside to help Cub Scouts earn their "Indian Heritage Award". In addition to the regular programs, on this day scouts can enjoy Native American Storytelling and Native American crafts.

Two sessions are available – a morning session starts at 10:00 a.m. and concludes at noon and an afternoon session begins at 2 p.m. and concludes at 4 p.m. Reservations are required. Simply call the park office at 961-9442 to make your reservations. Payment must be received in advance two weeks before the date of the event. The cost is 75 cents per scout and $1.00 per leader or adult.

If you have to cancel or are running late, please call us. Late arrivals may result in shortened program times. If you have any further questions or would like to make a reservation, please call the park at (501) 961-9442, or write to us at the following address:
