TARZAN The Broadway Musical

Who would have thought that a character that first appeared nearly 95 years ago, and has been read and seen by most of the people alive today - in the form of serials in countless newspapers in countless countries - has been featured in 26 novels, and has had more than 44 movies made on him, would create a sensation when he appeared on the stage of Broadway?  Right from the time Edgar Rice Burroughs introduced Tarzan in his novel, "Tarzan of the Apes", in October 1912, he has enamored children and adults alike, and Disney's adaptation of Tarzan for Broadway has brought in children to the Richard Rogers Theater in droves.

"TARZAN The Broadway Musical", the fifth adaptation for Broadway of a Disney movie after Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Hunchback of Notre Dame (musical), and Mary Poppins, was so anticipated that more than 20 million dollars worth of Broadway tickets were sold in advance!

This Tab Murphy, Bob Tzudiker, and Noni White adaptation for Broadway, presented by Disney Theatrical Productions, previewed at Richard Rogers Theater on March 24, 2006 and opened on May 10, 2006.  Since then, all the shows have been sold out, and no other musical has seen so many children pass through its portals.  A third of the children were estimated to be 12 years old.  Tarzan tickets have been selling on average for $72.00.

The stage pyrotechnics were great even by the finicky standards of Broadway.  Meryl Tankard choreographed the simian dances and the leaps by the leopards, and Pichon Baldinu handled the aerial movements.  What is great about this Broadway production is that even the adults could re-live their youth, and enjoy it as much as the children did.

The Story Profile

The story starts with a shipwreck off the coast of Africa in 1888.  A young couple and their infant son survive their burning ship and find themselves on the shores of unexplored Africa.  They build themselves a tree house to live in.  A leopard kills the parents, and the infant is adopted by a gorilla - Kala - and becomes a part of the gorilla tribe.  This infant grows up to become Tarzan.

Years later, as a young man of 18, Tarzan meets his first human - Jane - the daughter of Professor Porter, an Englishman on an expedition to Africa.  Eventually, Tarzan and Jane fall in love.  When it is time for the expedition to return home, it is also time for the young lovers to decide whether to live together or part ways.

The theatrics are highly impressive - the moving images of the Dark Continent...  a large sailing vessel...  a raging sea...  along with all the sound effects.  The inhabitants of the jungle flying all over the stage - the aerial feats are breathtaking.

Tarzan Trivia
